Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections
May 2020, I was appointed to Supervisor of Elections
All candidates in this race were asked the same questions by the League of Women Voters.
Beyond your educational background, what qualifies you to be the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections? (400 character limit)
I have 17 years of experience as an elections administrator. During that time I have conducted more than 320 elections. I am a Certified Elections Registration Administrator (CERA). I am also a subject-matter expert for the association of Florida Supervisors of Elections.
Do you think all eligible voters in Pinellas County have equitable access to the ballot box, regardless of race, ethnicity, disability or economic status? If yes, what current practices most support equity? If no, what actions would you take to improve equity? (400 character limit)
Yes. As Supervisor of Elections, my office treats all citizens fairly and with dignity. I rely upon data to make evidence-based decisions. A mail ballot is the great equalizer to eliminate any barriers to the electoral process. We provide pre-paid postage and 25 ballot drop-off locations.
Since the passage of the Voting Rights Restoration Amendment to the Florida constitution in 2018, there has been considerable legal back-and-forth regarding the enfranchisement of Returning Citizens/ex-offenders. How will your office reach out to and support these citizens to help them understand their eligibility and how they can register to vote? (400 character limit)
We understand the complex process returning citizens must navigate to determine whether they have met all the terms of their sentences, which is why a State system must be developed that applicants can use to determine eligibility. My office has always been a resource to assist applicants, whether providing phone access to make long-distance calls, access to a computer, and mailing documents.
In recent elections, Pinellas County had few early voting locations as compared to our population size, and correspondingly low rates of early voting. Would you expand the number of early voting locations in Pinellas County? Why or why not? (400 character limit)
Pinellas voters have embraced voting by mail. Being pragmatic and data driven, I am always re-evaluating ways to increase access to the electoral process. In each General Election since 2010, including the 2020 March and August Primaries, Pinellas’ turnout has exceeded that of the five largest counties in the state (Pinellas being the sixth) and the State’s average.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our election systems in the next four years? How would you address this challenge? (400 character limit)
Misinformation causes confusion, which can have a negative impact on voter participation. It is essential to our Constitutional Republic that we are civic minded and actively participating in elections. I have a responsibility to use every resource available to educate voters that their Supervisor of Elections office is the official source for information.
Do you support automatic voter registration and/or same-day voter registration? Why or why not? (400 character limit)
As Supervisor of Elections, I am responsible for following the law. Currently, Florida’s voter registration deadline is 29 days prior to any election.
Misinformation and disinformation can confuse voters and erode their confidence in the electoral process. What steps would you take to prevent and combat the spread of disinformation and misinformation regarding voting by mail, election security and voter fraud? (400 character limit)
As previously stated, misinformation is the biggest challenge facing us. Voters also have concerns about security. We have implemented chain-of-custody, reconciliation, and auditing procedures. We continue to enhance our physical/cybersecurity posture and leverage technology to protect against voter fraud. There are also redundancies in place to reduce single points of failure.
