How would you grade the County Commission's response to the COVID-19 crisis? What more should be done by the Commission to protect public health, especially in relation to elderly residents and the communities disproportionately impacted by the pandemic? (400 character limit)
Commissioners deserve an A for their handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. To protect the public, free public mask distribution, additional sites for COVID-19 testing (low-income housing complexes), and antibody testing. Every nursing home resident and staff should be tested periodically to assure they are not contagious. Based on increased numbers, all officers and inmates should be tested.
As a County Commissioner, what will you do to address the need for safe, low-income housing for the homeless and affordable housing for low- to middle-income workers and families? How will your recommendations be funded? (400 character limit)
I am working with a private developer who is committed to building 246 affordable/workforce units in St. Petersburg.I support increasing the Social Action Funding budget for homeless shelters like St. Vincent DePaul, Pinellas Hope, Family Resources, and construction of Tiny Homes/Granny Units.I will seek State/Federal funding vie CDBG dollars, State Tax Credits, and Public/Private Partnerships.
>What is your vision for creating a regional mass transit system that will meet Pinellas County’s future needs? As a County Commissioner, how will you coordinate with other state and regional agencies to make it happen? (400 character limit)
I will use the planning vehicle in place. Forward Pinellas is the way to expand transit heading North up the I-4 Corridor and South to Broward County. A regional planning approach will require additional funding on top of the $28 million PSTA just received for mass Rapid Transit. Building on the Transportation Management plan calls for public/private,local, state, and federal dollars.
How will you balance the demands for economic development against the impact of rising sea levels and the need for environmental protections? (400 character limit)
Pinellas County has a Resiliency Officer- focused on growth and environmental impacts. I suggest working with USF's Oceanography program to map out coastal erosion concerns while monitoring sea level rise. Requiring clean energy construction standards, requiring a percentage of impervious surfaces for new construction, and addressing construction in high hazard coastal zones are paramount.
A national discussion is taking place about the reallocation of funding from policing efforts tied to social issues such as mental health, affordable housing, and drug rehabilitation, and into community-based programs designed to proactively address these issues. Do you agree with this strategy? Why or why not? (400 character limit)
I fully support reallocating dollars to increase funding in the areas of mental health, child welfare services, substance abuse programming, homeless transitional services, and domestic violence.Police officers are not hired nor specifically equipped in these areas.I will suggest setting up crisis unit teams within police patrol units to handle these calls instead of a police officer.
If elected, what will be your two highest priorities, and what actions will you take to address them within your first six months in office? (Your response may expand on a previous answer or relate to a new topic) (400 character limit)
I will work with my colleagues on cutting down the time to have plans reviewed and building permits issued. Identifying cost savings will reduce the cost of constructing affordable workforce housing- passing the savings on to the customer. The Small Business Development Center increased $7 million dollars in business. Satellite/weekend services will increase volume and accessibility.
